2013 Audi Q5 Hybrid

Audi has done it again, not only have they made the sporty SUV luxury formula outstanding with the Audi Q5, but now they have also done the hybrid right as well. For the year 2013, two major engine updates were made to the Audi Q5 first, there is an all-new 3.0T supercharged engine that is capable of 272HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. The second all-new engine is a Hybrid that uses a mixture of a hybrid battery alongside the 2.0T base engine to produce 245HP and a whopping 354 lb-ft of torque. In performance, the 3.0T engine goes from 0-60 in 6 seconds and the 2.0T hybrid from 0-60 in 6.8 seconds. 6.8 seconds not only makes this a fast SUV, but it also makes this one of the fastest hybrids in general with Toyota and Nissan hybrid cars, taking over 8 seconds to get the 60.

The most impressive part of the 2.0T hybrid however is the fuel economy. At an estimated 24MPG city and 30MPG highway this Audi Q5 gets 26MPG combined, making it more fuel efficient than a VW GTI, Civic SI, and the Ford Focus ST. You also have to factor in that this vehicle gets similar performance numbers, to the above vehicles as well. All three of these cars take around 7 seconds to hit 60MPH making this one real rocket of an SUV.
Hybrid technology has been lackluster in the past couple of years for two reasons. The reasons that hybrid technology has been criticized, was that the performance was weaker than base engine models and that you were paying a higher price. Now, not only is the performance not far away from the high end engine model, but the price difference has become meaningless now. In the US, a fully loaded 3.0T Audi Q5, tops out at $55,000 and the Audi Q5 Hybrid tops out at the same price. So no longer is there a premium to own a hybrid vehicle over the other base models.

So there you have it, the 2013 Audi Q5 hybrid should be a smashing success. It has no competition in this segment (no X3 or GLK hybrid competition) it’s priced well, and it gets 30MPG highway, something that was almost unheard of 5 years ago in automobiles. Audi always finds a way to meet or beat the competition, and quite frankly – The 2013 Audi Q5 is no different.
